No one wants to imagine the idea of an active shooter/assailaint in their place of work or learning, but being prepared can help lessen the negative outcomes that occurs from such a situation.
In the case of an active shooter/assailaint, it's important to remember three main concepts: Run, Hide, Fight.
- If you can safely evacuate the building in which you're located, do so (Run)
- If you cannot evacuate, find a safe hiding space. It should be away from any doors or windows where the assailant can see you. Barracade the entrance to your hiding spot using any heavy materials you may have. Make sure the lights are turned out, and your phone is silenced. Refrain from talking. (Hide)
- If it comes to it, be prepared to fight the assailant for your life. Use any means to escape the area where the assailaint is located (Fight).
For an idea of how this would look in action in real life, you can watch the Ready Houston video below. The Office of Emergency Management and TUPD also offer a collaborative TUready Active Assailant training periodically throughout the year.
