A safer and more beautiful Broad Street

Temple will partner with Philadelphia Vision Zero to upgrade pedestrian safety features on campus such as signals, turning lanes and crosswalks using a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation . The project will focus on Broad Street between Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Allegheny Avenue as well as Cecil B. Moore Avenue between 10th Street and 17th Street.

Safety Partnerships

The External Relations Unit of TUPD has implemented a dozen community-centric programs that provide North Philadelphia youth with life skills and career development opportunities that keep them on a successful path at school.

  • Effective Wednesday, March 1, Temple University Police Department and Philadelphia Police Department launched an expanded agreement in which PPD will provide up to 288 supplemental hours of patrols per week throughout Temple’s campus patrol zone. TUPD will also welcome eight new officers on March 17.
  • Monthly commanders and supervisors CompStat meetings, to discuss statistics and crime reduction strategies, track progress, increase communication, incorporate training, and enhance collaboration. CompStat is a performance management system used to reduce crime and achieve other Police Department goals by emphasizing information-sharing, responsibility and accountability, and improving effectiveness. It includes four generally recognized core components: (1) timely and accurate information or intelligence; (2) rapid deployment of resources; (3) effective tactics; and (4) consistent follow-up. Our leadership team also attends Philadelphia Police Department CompStat meetings and shooting briefings.
  • Executive leadership meetings with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) district-level and executive leadership, and Temple University leadership to discuss staffing and resource allocations, crime reduction strategies, case updates, and collaboration. 
  • Partner with the city’s new “Operation Pinpoint” deployment plan to impact gun violence. You can learn more about the city’s plan to redeploy 100 officers to districts with high rates of gun violence in this Philadelphia Tribune article.
