Qualifications and Processes for TUPD

Police Officer - Trainee

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a United States citizenship
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Hiring Process:

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to the testing stage. The entire testing process is made up of 2 sections with 6 steps. In section 1, the physical fitness assessment and written examination will be performed on the same day.

  • The written portion is a two-part test that measures vocabulary development, comprehension, and reading. Applicants must meet a minimum 9th grade reading level. 
  • Applicants are encouraged to read the study guide and take the practice tests:

Step 3. Background Investigation: 

  • A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on select applicants. Members of the Recruit Background Investigations Team will reach out to current and past employers, family, friends, and neighbors. The team will also review your credit and driving history.

Step 4. Psychological Evaluation:

  • Candidates are required to have a one-hour psychological evaluation with a State of Pennsylvania licensed psychologist.
     

Step 5. Medical Evaluation:

  • The medical evaluation consists of a complete MPOETC physical examination. A drug test is required during this examination.

Step 6. Police Academy Training Program

  • If you have satisfactorily completed the process and are offered employment to attend an academy, you will undergo up to nine (9) months of intensive training designed to produce the best police officers in the country.
Lateral Police Officers

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a United States citizenship
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Currently Act 120 certified

Hiring Process:

  • Oral Board Interview:
    • A panel will conduct this interview to measure the candidate’s ability to communicate information or ideas to people in the areas of reasoning, oral expression, and comprehension.
  • Background Investigation:
    • A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on select applicants. Members of the Recruit Background Investigations Team will reach out to current and past employers, family, friends, and neighbors. The team will also review your credit and driving history.
